East Peoria Police Department issued the following announcement on July 2.
Due to Independence Day, the transportation schedule and road closures are being altered for the movement of large wind turbine parts through the city. The East Peoria Police Department said no wind turbine parts will be moved through East Peoria on Wednesday, July 4 and Thursday, July 5. The transportation schedule will resume on Friday, July 6 causing early morning traffic delays, before the normal morning rush hour. An additional transport morning is scheduled for Saturday, July 7 to make up for the holiday.
The police department be closing North Main Street from Washington to Camp streets and West Washington Street from Columbia to Main Street at 1:30 a.m. Monday through Friday allow transport of wind turbine parts from the TP&W railyard through the city and to their eventual destination at the Walnut Ridge wind farm in Bureau County. The roads will reopen to traffic between 5 and 6 a.m. each day.
In addition, some wind turbine transport trucks will be moving between 9 a.m. and noon each day, causing momentary traffic stoppages at Main and Washington streets.
Except for the Saturday road closure on July 7, the roads normally will be shut down only during weekdays through mid-September.
Components for the wind turbines owned by Vestas-American Wind Technology are being transported on mostly over-sized trucks by ATS Inc. The City of East Peoria has negotiated a reimbursement agreement with Vestas regarding police department traffic control costs and repairs of potential damage to the streets.
