Canton Union School District 66 Board met May 7.

Here is the minutes provided by the Board:

1. Call To Order

Board President Leonard Barnard called the special board meeting to order in the boardroom at 7:00 pm.

2. Roll Call

Board members present and answering roll call were Leonard Barnard, Ben Bishop, Lori Coleman, Jane Lewis, Tom Snowman, and Mark Tarter. Board member Matt Kees answered roll call via telephone conference call and participated in the special board meeting.

3. Recognition Of Audience Requests For Presentation On Agenda Items

There were no audience requests to address the Board of Education.

4. Discussion

A. Discuss District Vision, Motto, and Value Statements

Curriculum Director Jason Parsons provided the process used in development of the proposed Motto, Vision, and Core Values for the Canton School District. The recommendation was formulated by reaching out to administrators, staff, students, city entities and stakeholders for their input. A marketing plan is in development, with the assistance of the Canton Area Chamber of Commerce, for publicizing the information and getting the District’s message out to their stakeholders. Marketing ideas include yard signs, brochures, website, CD for realtors, video, movable banners, and display of flags. Costs, funding, and priorities are being researched as the project moves forward. (On File)

B. Discuss Drafts of the 2018-2019 Student Handbooks for Canton High School, Ingersoll Middle School, and District 66 Elementary Schools

Canton High School Principal Mike Lindy provided a review of the proposed revisions to the CHS handbook and the process used by the Handbook Team Members to develop the ideas. Proposed major changes were: 1) Open Campus Privilege/Positive not Punitive Discipline; 2) Weighted Grades; and 3) Semester Exam Exemption. The Board discussed the proposals and the impact on students of each proposal. The Code of Conduct detailed in the handbook for extracurricular participants has been updated to Code and allows for application consistently across the student body. Future changes to the handbook will be provided to the Board. (On File)

Ingersoll Middle School administrators Principal Wayne Krus and Assistant Principal Nathan Pugh provided a review of the proposed revisions to the IMS Handbook for next year. Changes reviewed included: 1) the PBIS discipline plan and the PBIS Card which will be on the student’s device; 2) alignment of the middle school handbook with the elementary handbook providing a smooth transition for students; and 3) and inclusion of the Extracurricular Participation Policy in the draft. No revisions were presented for the elementary handbook. (On File)

5. Closed Session

A. Discuss the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the district – [5 ILCS 120/2(c)(1)]

Board member Jane Lewis moved to enter closed session to discuss the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the district; Board member Ben Bishop seconded. Voting yes by roll call were board members Lewis, Bishop, Barnard, Coleman, Kees, Snowman, and Tarter. Motion carried. The Board entered closed session at 8:18 pm. The Board returned to open session at 8:23 pm.

6. Action

A. Consider Approval of Retirement Agreement and Release of All Claims with Maintenance Supervisor Richard Mayhew

Board member Lewis moved to accept the Retirement Agreement and Release of All Claims with Maintenance Supervisor Richard Mayhew as presented. Bishop seconded. Voting yes by roll call were board members Lewis, Bishop, Coleman, Kees, Snowman, Tarter, and Barnard. Motion carried. (On File)

7. Adjourn Public Hearing

Board member Bishop moved to adjourn the special board meeting. Board member Lewis seconded. Voting yes by roll call were board members Bishop, Lewis, Coleman, Kees, Snowman, Tarter, and Barnard. Motion carried.

Board President Barnard declared the public hearing adjourned at 8:24 pm.
