PEKIN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: Illinois Central College to Host Adult Education Career Fair

Sign

Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Sept. 10.

The Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) is partnering with Illinois Central College to bring area employers and adult education students together for a Career Fair on Thursday, September 27 from 10 a.m. to noon at Arbor Hall on the Peoria Campus, located at 5407 N. University St., Peoria. This event is free and open to the public.

Adult education students will have a chance to explore career opportunities with local manufacturing and healthcare employers and learn about apprenticeship programs available through the construction trades.

The ICCB Adult Education Career Fair is being held in conjunction with National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, September 23 – 29. This annual event underscores the continued demand for programs and services for adult students who need to improve basic skills in reading, writing, and math and obtain a high school equivalency certificate. More than 36 million adults nationwide, including 1.2 million in Illinois, lack basic literacy skills that limit their ability to advance in education and at work.

Representatives from ICC also will be on hand with information on career and workforce training programs, including Truck Driver Training, Highway Construction Careers Training, the Success After the GED College Bridge program, GED Preparation and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs, and Career Services. Local community service representatives from programs such as Career Link and others also will be available to provide information.

“The ICCB Adult Education Career Fair is an opportunity for student to connect with local employment and educational opportunities that will put them on a path towards middle class wages and family sustainability,” said Jennifer Foster, ICCB Deputy Director for Adult Education and Workforce. “With their long history of partnering with local business and industry, Illinois Central College is the ideal host for our inaugural event.”

“We are honored that ICCB chose ICC to serve as a host site for the Career Fair,” said Dr. Andrew Kerr, ICC Associate Vice President of Workforce Development. “Community colleges within the system share a common goal to provide the educational opportunities individuals need to earn credentials leading to jobs with family-sustaining wages. We are pleased to offer a one-stop shop for individuals interesting in learning more about the educational and employment options available to them.”

For more information on the Career Fair, please contact the ICC Workforce Development Office at (309) 690-6863.
