City of Canton Fire and Police Commission met Feb. 11.

Here is the minutes provided by the commission:

A regular meeting of the Canton Fire and Police Commission was held on Tuesday, February 11, 2020. The meeting was called to order at 1:03 p.m. by Commissioner Mayall.

Present: Commissioner Chad Mayall                Public Safety Director Richard Fairburn

Commissioner Greg Gossett              Mayor Kent McDowell

              Commissioner Samantha Norton

Public Participation- none

Motion was made by Commissioner Norton seconded by Commissioner Gossett to accept the Minutes of the January 14, 2020 regular meeting and the January budget. All Ayes, motion carried.

Training certificates: A training certificate for a firefighter was reviewed. Old Business – none

Probationary Employees: None

Bills: No bills.

Testing Cycles: Regarding the PD Initial re-testing, applications are due March 6, physical ability testing is March 14, and written and oral exams are March 21.

Regarding the Fire Lt. Promotional – oral interviews are February 22 and the written test is February 29, both at the fire house.

New Business : A police officer has retired, effective immediately, so there is a position open. PS Director Fairburn will make a request to the city council to fill the position. If approved, the commission will proceed with the hiring process for the one candidate on the lateral list. Because the rules and regulations do not specify what testing, if any, the commission requires of a lateral hire, the commission looks at each lateral hire on a case-by-case basis. In this situation, the commission decided to require a physical exam only, since this candidate is already a current officer for another department, and because the candidate would have a full year on probation.

Having no other business, a Motion was made by Commissioner Mayall seconded by Commissioner Gossett to adjourn the meeting. All Ayes, motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 1:21 p.m.
