CITY OF EAST PEORIA: Open Burning Banned Effective April 6

Burningopen

City of East Peoria issued the following announcement on April 4.

Due to health concerns caused by the coronavirus emergency, East Peoria city officials have decided to ban spring open burning of yard waste effective Monday, April 6.

The decision to ban burning was made because the smoke from burning landscape waste and leaves can adversely affect people who have existing respiratory issues, and East Peorians are spending much more time at their residences because of the state’s stay at home order due to the COVID-19 emergency.

Open burning of leaves and landscape waste is usually allowed during the month of April. City officials initially were allowing the practice but have decided to cancel the open burning season due to health concerns caused by the COVID-19 emergency.

Dry landscape waste can be burned through dusk Sunday, April 5 in accordance with the city’s open burning ordinance. The ban will be in full effect Monday, April 6.

If a complaint is received about a resident conducting open burning, the resident will initially receive a verbal notification about the ban. Repeated violations could result in a fine. Complaints must be made to the East Peoria Police Department by calling 309-698-4700.
