Elkhart Rural Fire Protection District responded to nine calls in 2018 - 25 percent less than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Elkhart Rural included seven fires - three structure fires, two vehicle fires and two other fires. The fire department also responded to one call for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $36,000 in fire loss - or about $5,143 per fire.

The department also received one false call.
