American Legion issued the following announcement on Feb. 5.
Free representation in 2020 by American Legion department service officers and national appeals representatives helped hundreds of thousands of veterans with VA benefits, according to end-of-year tallies. Notably, department service officers nationwide helped veterans and their families obtain an estimated $3.7 billion in disability compensation and other benefits they were due.
Also in January, The American Legion disbursed National Emergency Fund, Child Welfare Foundation and Operation Comfort Warriors grants to qualified recipients. And efforts by local posts and departments delivered needed meals in communities and deployed a program to send care packages to police officers and dispatchers in New York City.
