In a Sept. 19 Facebook post, Sen. Jil Tracy shared a piece that explained her concerns about the SAFE-T Act.
The Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority released a document that went over the SAFE-T Act, including the elimination of cash bail, changes to use of force, and other issues that were dealt with in the bill. Kankakee and Will County State's Attorneys issued separate lawsuits centered on the SAFE-T Act and the elimination of cash bail this month.
"Many have asked about the So called Safe-T-Act that takes effect Jan. 1, 2023. This article explains why I, along with so many law enforcement members are so opposed and seek major changes to the bill prior to its taking effect" Tracy said in a recent post to her official Facebook account.
Tracy also shared a Capital News Illinois article that went over the controversy that currently surrounds the bill.
"Republicans and state’s attorneys have continued to fight for changes to the law, up to a full repeal, arguing that while the intent may be to empower judges to detain more dangerous individuals, the bill as written is too limiting," the article said of the bill
The Capital News Illinois article also expects there to be a flurry of amendments made to the bill in the meantime, prolonging the controversy surrounding the new plan.
