Darin LaHood, Representative of Illinois, said that the One Big Beautiful Bill will lower taxes and increase take-home pay for families, assisting those affected by high state and local taxes. The statement was made on X.
"The One Big Beautiful Bill lowers taxes and increases take-home pay for families across Illinois," said Darin McKay LaHood, U.S. Representative from Illinois. "A win-win for Illinoisans who have been burdened by some of the highest state and local taxes. House Republicans is committed to ensuring Americans keep more of their hard earned money."
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, passed by the U.S. House in May 2025, aims to make the 2017 tax cuts permanent while reducing spending on Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and clean energy initiatives. Critics, including Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, warn that the measure could raise costs or reduce benefits for many Illinois families, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.
According to The Sun and MarketWatch, estimates suggest that the One Big Beautiful Bill could save a typical Illinois middle-income family between $1,000 and $4,000 annually through an increased Child Tax Credit and expanded deductions. However, savings will vary by household.
Recent analysis by WalletHub indicates that Illinois families have faced a steady state and local tax burden near 10% of income over the past five years. This ranks the state among the highest in the country for tax rates.
LaHood's official House biography notes that he is a Republican representing Illinois’s 16th district since 2015. He serves on the House Ways and Means Committee and is known for his advocacy on tax reform and middle-class tax relief.
