In a March 3 Facebook post, Illinois state Sen. Neil Anderson shared a new bill to reduce the tax burden for those who work overtime.

Anderson's post also shared a link to an expanded statement about how he wants to help Illinois residents.

"People in Illinois are already taxed enough, and we should not punish them for working extra by taking even more of their hard-earned money," Anderson said in his post.

The senator noted that he was motivated by a desire to help working families.

“This is the least we can do for people struggling to make ends meet and who are putting in extra hours just to be able to feed their families and pay their bills,” he said in his statement.

Senate Bill 51 would allow taxpayers to deduct a portion of their state taxes equal to overtime wages earned during the tax year. The bill would go into effect immediately upon signing. As of Jan. 20, it had been referred to the Assignments Committee.

Anderson has served the 47th District since 2015, the General Assembly website said. The district now includes portions and or all of Adams, Fulton, Hancock, Henderson, Henry, Knox, Mason, McDonough, Menard, Mercer, Peoria, Rock Island, Schuyler, Stark, Tazwell and Warren counties. When he is not serving the residents of the 47th District as a legislator in Springfield, Anderson is a firefighter/paramedic in Moline.
