Illinois State Representative Ryan Spain promoted a household waste collection event in Peoria County in a Facebook post published on Sunday.

"Peoria County Government is hosting a one-day Illinois EPA Household Hazardous Waste Event on Saturday, June 10th, by appointment only," Spain wrote. "To register and find more information, visit: https://www.peoriacounty.org/.../Household-Hazardous..."

Spain has represented Illinois' 73rd District in the State House of Representatives since 2017. Before serving in the state legislature, Spain was elected to the Peoria City Council in 2007 as the youngest at-large member in Peoria history, a position that he held until Fall 2016. He is currently employed as the Vice President of Economic Development at OSF Healthcare System.

Spain also shared a graphic highlighting event details. The event will be appointment-only and will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 10. Acceptable items include acids and corrosives, household batteries, pool chemicals and oil-based and hobby paints and chemicals. Unwelcome items include latex paint, waste materials from agriculture, business, or industries, ammunition, smoke detectors and lead-acid batteries.

Individuals can schedule an appointment through this link. If you can't attend this specific event, Illinois EPA has a list of collection events statewide.

The official Peoria County website provides tips on how to transport acceptable collection event materials, including the following: Keep products securely capped or sealed in their original containers with clear labels. Place containers in a cardboard box or plastic bag to contain leaks and ensure efficient removal of materials. Do not mix or combine products.

"Any labeled or unknown materials should be marked with whatever information you have concerning the substance," the website reads. "If you need packing material, use kitty litter or oil absorbent. When you arrive at the collection site, trained technicians and chemists will safely unload the waste from your vehicle and prepare it for safe and proper disposal."
