The Farm Family Resource Initiative, a project of the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, is providing valuable resources to assist farmers with farm-related issues, including their mental and physical health needs. This initiative, run through the Center for Rural Health and Social Service Development, offers a range of resources, outreach programs, education, and training to support farmers and their families.
In a recent news release, Rep. Travis Weaver informed his constituents about the Farm Family Resource Initiative and its available resources. The program, which is now available in every county in Illinois, was initially identified as a need by Sen. Scott Bennett in 2019. After running successful pilot programs in six counties, the initiative expanded to serve all counties across the state.
Karen Stallman, the program coordinator for the Farm Family Resource Initiative, highlighted the various resources available. These include a 24/7 helpline, text line, email option, Telehealth counseling sessions, a monthly blog, support groups, and a podcast. These resources aim to provide farmers and their families with the support and assistance they need, particularly in areas of mental health, stress management, and health disparities within the agricultural community.
Additionally, the Farm Family Resource Initiative recognizes the specific needs of women farmers and ranchers. It offers resources tailored to their unique challenges and provides multiple helplines where Illinois farmers and their families can seek support and assistance. The initiative also addresses the higher risk of developing dementia among individuals working in agriculture, offering resources such as the Alzheimers Care Center resource guide.
Rep. Travis Weaver, who shared the news about this valuable initiative, has a strong background in finance and marketing, having earned a Bachelor of Arts in Finance and Marketing from The University of Alabama and a Master of Business Administration from Northwestern University. He has experience with Caterpillar in Finance and Strategy and is actively involved in his community, tutoring GED students and chairing the Education Committee at Wildlife Prairie Park when he's not working for his constituents in Springfield.
Overall, the Farm Family Resource Initiative is providing crucial support to farmers and their families in Illinois. By addressing mental and physical health needs, the initiative aims to improve the overall well-being of those in the agricultural community and ensure they have access to the resources and assistance they require.
