Construction is set to begin in March on the Adams Street and Jefferson Avenue One-Way to Two-Way (OWTW) Conversion Project, which aims to improve traffic flow and enhance pedestrian safety. The two-and-a-half-year, $18.9 million project will see Adams Street and Jefferson Avenue transformed into two-way streets, with completion expected in the summer of 2026.
The project will cover the stretch of Adams Street from Walnut Street to Hamilton Boulevard, as well as Jefferson Avenue from Walnut Street to Fayette Street. As part of the conversion, several enhancements will be made to the existing infrastructure. This includes the installation of new corner bump-outs to shorten pedestrian crossings, the addition of bike lanes, the upgrading of traffic signals, and the mill and overlay of the existing pavement.
"The Adams Street and Jefferson Avenue One Way to Two Way Conversion Project is an exciting initiative that will greatly benefit our community," says John Smith, the project manager. "By converting these streets into two-way traffic, we aim to improve traffic flow and create a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists."
Upon completion, the final roadway will feature one lane in each direction and a bidirectional turn lane. Existing on-street parking and sidewalks will be maintained to ensure convenience for residents and visitors. The project team assures that disruptions will be minimized as much as possible throughout the construction process.
To keep the public informed about the project, various communication channels will be utilized. Regular updates, including background information, project schedule, FAQs, and photos, will be posted on the project website. The website will be updated weekly once construction commences.
In addition to the project website, an email distribution list will be established. Interested individuals can contact the OWTW Project Team to be added to the distribution list. Weekly updates will be sent to keep subscribers informed of the project's progress.
