The Department of Public Works is closely monitoring the Illinois River levels for potential flooding. According to the latest forecast, the river is expected to crest at 22.5 feet overnight on Thursday, February 1, and into the morning of Friday, February 2.
"Department staff will continue to monitor river levels and conditions throughout the week," said a spokesperson for the Department of Public Works.
At 22.7 feet, flooding is expected to begin in low-lying areas in Riverfront Park. In anticipation of this, sandbagging efforts will begin as the forecasted crest levels continue to rise.
"We are currently readying equipment and planning for the next course of action should the forecasted crest levels continue to rise," said the spokesperson.
However, the Department does not anticipate any impacts to businesses along the riverfront or Water Street at the current projected crest levels. The spokesperson added that there may be parking lot and sidewalk closures along the riverfront in the coming days.
The river conditions are constantly changing due to ice jams and melt rates in the northern portions of the Illinois River. Public Works has a plan in place if the crest levels continue to rise.
It is important for residents and businesses in the area to stay informed and prepared for potential flooding. The Department of Public Works will provide updates on the river conditions and any necessary actions that need to be taken.
As the situation unfolds, the Department of Public Works will remain vigilant in monitoring the river levels and taking appropriate measures to ensure the safety of the community.
