City of Peoria Honors Retired Manual High School Art Teacher and Coach

February 26, 2024 (Peoria, IL) An honorary street naming ceremony was held at Manual High School to pay tribute to retired art instructor and coach, Mr. Lawrence “Larry” Anthony Hendricks, Jr. Mr. Hendricks, who taught at Manual High School from 1970 to 2004, was honored for his significant contributions to the school and community.

During his tenure at Manual High School, Mr. Hendricks served as a teacher, coach, and mentor in various capacities. He was the first boys' soccer head coach, head coach for girls' basketball and girls' track and field, and head coach for boys' track and field. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in the art department, where he was the lead teacher, department head, and the founder of Manual's Afro Club and advisor of the art club.

Acknowledged as the “Godfather of Peoria's Talent” show, Mr. Hendricks was recognized for his dedication to nurturing young talent and fostering artistic and athletic excellence. Mayor Ali presented a Mayoral Proclamation in recognition of Mr. Hendricks’ remarkable achievements.

Aside from his teaching and coaching roles, Mr. Hendricks excelled as a photographer, continuing his artwork from his studio at the Contemporary Arts Center where he has been a resident artist for the past fifteen years.

The honorary street sign, titled “Larry Hendricks Street”, was proposed by the Manual Alumni Student Recognition Association and is located at Griswold and Lincoln. Former students expressed, "This location runs behind the room where Mr. Hendricks molded young artists who made the world a more interesting place."

The ceremony was attended by various speakers, including Reverend Marlon Young, Tanya Adams, former athletes, and family members. A video of the event will be available on the City of Peoria YouTube page tomorrow, allowing the community to celebrate and honor the legacy of Mr. Lawrence “Larry” Anthony Hendricks, Jr.
