The Rock Island Arsenal (RIA), located on the Mississippi River between Illinois and Iowa, has been a significant presence in the Quad Cities for over 150 years. Established in 1862, it serves as a hub for manufacturing, logistics, and defense support for the U.S. Army. Currently, it employs more than 6,000 civilian workers and about 250 military personnel while supporting approximately 14,000 jobs through direct and indirect employment. The economic impact of RIA is substantial, contributing over $1 billion annually to the local economy.

Historically, the land was used by the Sauk Native Americans before European settlers arrived. Tensions led to the Black Hawk War of 1832 after which control passed to the U.S. government. Fort Armstrong was established on this site in 1816 to protect American interests following the War of 1812. By 1862, Congress designated it as a national arsenal during the Civil War era.

Post-Civil War, Rock Island Arsenal became a key manufacturing center producing military equipment and ammunition. It played crucial roles during World Wars I and II by expanding its manufacturing capabilities significantly.

Today, RIA remains an economic cornerstone for the Quad Cities region with over 60 Department of Defense and private companies operating there. It specializes in advanced manufacturing at its Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center—the only vertically integrated manufacturing operation within the Department of Defense.

Department of Defense spending drives significant local economic activity with annual averages reaching $178 million between 2013-2017 from DOD contracts alone—comprising about 2.6% of all DOD spending in Illinois.

State Representative Dan Swanson highlighted RIA's strategic importance: “The Army National Guard and Reserve Forces rely on 1st Army for preparing for war... If a Soldier anywhere in the world is driving a piece of Army equipment... it is most likely that a soldier or civilian at Rock Island Arsenal was part of that process.”

RIA also integrates into community life through partnerships like those under the Defense Community Infrastructure Program which enhance both base facilities and surrounding areas.

As RIA continues supporting national defense efforts while boosting regional economies; it stands ready to face future challenges honoring its historical legacy.
