A neurosurgeon with expertise in advanced endovascular and cerebrovascular surgical techniques has joined UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale. Dr. Omer Doron, MD, PhD, became part of the neurosurgery team at the Hinsdale hospital in October, enhancing the facility's capabilities in minimally invasive treatments for stroke and vascular diseases.
Dr. Doron's skills encompass both minimally invasive and open microsurgical techniques for diagnosing and treating central nervous system vascular diseases such as stroke, aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), and carotid artery disease. He also provides general neurosurgical care for conditions like brain tumors, hydrocephalus, and head trauma.
Minimally invasive methods employed by Dr. Doron involve using small surgical tools through catheters guided by imaging technology. These techniques typically result in quicker recoveries and fewer complications due to the absence of large incisions.
In addition to patient care, Dr. Doron is working towards earning comprehensive stroke center certification for UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale from The Joint Commission. This designation signifies that a hospital meets high standards for specialized care in complex stroke cases.
The hospital recently launched a state-of-the-art neurointerventional angiography suite where advanced surgeries can be performed under Dr. Doron's oversight. It also acquired an ARTIS icono biplane system that enhances imaging capabilities during procedures.
“Stroke is a time-sensitive disease,” said Dr. Doron. “Our neurointerventional angiography suite and its specially trained team members put us on par with the nation’s top healthcare institutions.”
Dr. Doron will perform surgeries exclusively at Hinsdale but will see patients across other UChicago Medicine AdventHealth locations including Bolingbrook, La Grange, and Glendale Heights.
Before joining UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale, Dr. Doron completed a fellowship in endovascular and cerebrovascular neurosurgery which included training under David Langer, MD at Lenox Hill Northwell Health in New York City and over two years at Massachusetts General Hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School.
His earlier experience includes serving as a physician in the Israel Defense Forces after obtaining his medical degree from Hebrew University Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem along with completing his residency at Hadassah University Hospital.
Besides clinical practice, Dr. Doron is involved in research focused on developing new treatments aimed at improving patient safety: “I have a huge drive for ensuring our patients get access to the latest treatment advances,” he stated.
