Congressman Darin LaHood of Illinois recently addressed the House Select Committee on China during its first hearing of the 119th Congress. The focus was on strengthening America's cyber defenses in the ongoing technological competition with China.
Rep. LaHood, who serves as Chairman of the House Intelligence Subcommittee on the National Security Agency (NSA) and Cyber, engaged in discussions with Rob Joyce, former NSA Director of Cybersecurity. He emphasized the importance of maintaining U.S. dominance in cyberspace to protect national security.
During his remarks, Rep. LaHood referenced comments made by CIA Director John Ratcliffe during his confirmation hearings. "Our new CIA Director, John Ratcliffe, in his confirmation hearings, talked and advocated for more aggressive offensive actions to counter the CCP’s growing influence around the world," said Rep. LaHood. He suggested that this approach should be extended specifically to cyberspace to enhance U.S. capabilities and safeguard national security.
Rep. LaHood also highlighted findings from a recent global threat assessment by cybersecurity company CrowdStrike: "Last week, the cyber security company, CrowdStrike, released their global threat assessment, and it's really alarming." The report indicated a significant increase in PRC-related cyber threats across various sectors from 2023 to 2024.
