June 9, 2025, Peoria, IL – Caron A. Payton, 18, has been charged with aggravated battery with a firearm in connection with a shooting incident that occurred in August 2024. The incident resulted in injuries to an 18-year-old male outside Amir’s Market. Although Payton was 17 at the time of the event, his case was automatically transferred to adult felony court due to his age and the nature of the charge.
During Payton's detention hearing, the state's petition to detain him was granted. This decision means he will remain in custody until his trial takes place.
The shooting happened on August 26, 2024, around 1:30 PM when police responded to a ShotSpotter alert indicating that 28 rounds had been fired in the East Bluff area on the 700 block of E. Frye. Officers arrived at the scene to find a victim with non-life-threatening injuries from multiple gunshot wounds. Surveillance footage captured during the incident showed the victim attempting to flee from two armed individuals who continued firing shots as he jumped over a fence.
Further investigation led detectives to obtain additional surveillance video that identified Payton and Jaylan Russell as the shooters involved in this case. Russell had already been charged previously. Payton was subsequently arrested on Thursday, June 5.
The investigation remains active, and authorities are urging anyone with information about this case to contact the Peoria Police Department at 309-673-4521.
