The City of Peoria has released a list of approved and prohibited consumer fireworks. According to the city's guidelines, certain novelty items are allowed for use and sale within city limits.
Approved items include party poppers, which contain no more than 0.25 grains (16mg) of explosive composition and expel non-flammable paper streamers or novelties. Snappers are also permitted; these small, paper-wrapped items contain up to 0.02 grains (1mg) of explosive composition and explode when dropped. Toy caps for toy pistols are allowed if they contain an average of .25 grains (16mg) per cap.
Other approved devices include snakes or glow worms, which produce a snake-like ash upon burning, smoke-generating devices that emit colored smoke without report, and sparklers. Sparklers can reach temperatures of 2000 degrees Fahrenheit and account for nearly 60% of reported firework injuries.
The City of Peoria Fireworks Ordinance 11-91 outlines prohibited fireworks. These include handheld fireworks, bottle rockets, firecrackers of any size or type, skyrockets, roman candles, chasers, buzz bombs, helicopters, missiles, planes, sky lanterns, pinwheels, and any ground items not identified as approved consumer fireworks. Violators will face a citation and a $250 fine.
