The Illinois State Board of Education has come under criticism for lowering academic standards in the state. Concerns have been raised that this move is intended to improve the appearance of student proficiency rates under the current administration.

Illinois State Representative Travis Weaver (R-Pekin) expressed his concerns, stating, "The Illinois State Board of Education should be helping students reach and even exceed benchmarks. Instead, they have lowered our state’s standards to try and make the Pritzker administration look better. This is unacceptable, and our children’s futures are at stake. We must work to raise the bar, not lower it, when it comes to student achievement in Illinois."

Weaver was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois' 93rd House District in 2023, succeeding Norine Hammond.
