The Illinois State Police (ISP) has issued a reminder to both motorists and farmers regarding traffic safety during the fall harvest season. As agriculture remains a key industry in Illinois, the movement of farm equipment on state roadways is expected to increase in the coming months.

The ISP urges drivers to exercise caution and patience when sharing the road with agricultural vehicles. "Share the road and be patient. Allow for extra travel time," the ISP stated. Drivers are advised to increase their following distance behind wide, slow-moving vehicles to improve visibility, reduce speed when approaching farm equipment, and pay attention to flashing amber lights and orange-red reflective triangles that indicate slower speeds.

Passing farm equipment in no passing zones or within 100 feet of intersections, railroad crossings, or bridges is illegal and dangerous. The ISP warns that improper passing can have deadly consequences and encourages drivers to be cautious when merging back into traffic lanes.

Motorists should also watch for turn signals or hand signals from farmers operating older equipment without electronic indicators. Additionally, drivers are reminded to be prepared to yield for wide agricultural machinery.
