Resurfacing work on Hamilton Boulevard and Liberty Street in Peoria, originally scheduled for Tuesday, October 7, has been delayed due to weather. The City of Peoria announced that the work will now take place on Wednesday, October 8, starting at 6 a.m.
The resurfacing is part of the Adams Street and Jefferson Avenue One-Way to Two-Way Conversion Project. Lane and parking restrictions will be implemented on both Hamilton Boulevard and Liberty Street to facilitate the work.
"While this work occurs, drivers can EXPECT LONG DELAYS. The use of ALTERNATIVE ROUTES IS STRONGLY ADVISED," according to the City of Peoria.
On Wednesday, periodic lane closures will be in effect on Hamilton Boulevard between N.E. Jefferson Avenue and N.E. Adams Street, with all lanes undergoing milling. Similar closures will take place on Liberty Street between S.W. Jefferson Avenue and S.W. Adams Street. Lane closures in the 300 block of both streets will change throughout the morning as work progresses.
Additionally, the far left two lanes of Adams Street from N. William Kumpf Boulevard to the Interstate 74 overpass will remain closed to all traffic.
Parking restrictions will also be enforced. Parking lanes on both the east and west sides of Hamilton Boulevard and Liberty Street will be closed. The northside parking lane on Adams Street from N. William Kumpf Boulevard to the Interstate 74 overpass will also be closed.
"NO ON-STREET PARKING WILL BE ALLOWED IN THESE AREAS. ON-STREET PARKING RESTRICTIONS WILL REMAIN IN EFFECT WHILE THE METERS ARE BAGGED. VEHICLES PARKED IN A RESTRICTED AREA WILL BE SUBJECT TO TOWING," the city stated.
Drivers may experience temporary delays, particularly when entering and exiting the County of Peoria Parking Deck. Off-street parking options remain available at the Jefferson and Twin Towers parking decks. Lane closures and parking restrictions are expected to change daily, and delays of up to 30 minutes are possible when accessing parking decks and businesses near the milling and paving work.
Traffic patterns are expected to revert to current conditions once resurfacing is complete, but one-way traffic on Adams Street will remain until next year. Daily updates on work locations and restrictions are scheduled through Friday, October 17. Flaggers will be present to guide traffic, and drivers are urged to exercise caution in the work zones.
