The Walking for Wellness program at Jacksonville Memorial Hospital will begin a new season on October 14. The initiative, held at the JHS Bowl located at 215 S. Church St., offers an indoor space for walking during periods when outdoor conditions are not favorable. The program will continue until March 27, 2026.
Lyn Dietz, who has participated in the program for about 13 years, values the sense of community among walkers. "You notice who’s there and who’s not," Dietz said. "It’s really good for those people who live alone – they have someone to check on them just through seeing them regularly on walk days."
Lois Wicks, a long-time participant at age 98, has been involved with the program for 25 years and appreciates the opportunity to socialize. More than 50 people signed a birthday card for her.
The facility is open to walkers of all ages from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on days when Jacksonville School District 117 is in session. The program does not operate during school holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas or when school is closed.
On average, about 75 individuals use the walking track each day it is available. There are no fees or registration requirements; however, participants are asked to check in and out upon arrival and departure.
