The recent rise in utility bills for Illinois residents has drawn attention to the state's energy policies. The increases coincided with the closure of several coal-burning power plants in Illinois, which are described as among the cleanest in the world.

Electricity suppliers licensed in Illinois were required to purchase peak-load power from a limited number of interstate grids. These grids sold electricity generated outside the state.

State Representative Travis Weaver addressed these issues, stating, "Moving forward, we must enact better policies that produce more energy, knock off the cap on our natural gas plants, stop shutting down clean coal plants, and get serious about bringing nuclear plants back online. It’s simple economics. If you have more supply, prices go down."

Although electric rates are expected to decrease during the winter and spring months, projections indicate that next summer's rates may surpass those of this year. Additional information about upcoming changes to electricity prices can be found at Ameren Illinois electricity prices changing for winter and spring. Here’s what to know.

Weaver, a Republican, was elected to represent Illinois' 93rd House District in 2023, succeeding Norine Hammond.
