With Halloween approaching, the City of Peoria Department of Public Works is urging residents to avoid active construction and work zones during trick-or-treating. The department notes that several roadway and infrastructure improvement projects are ongoing throughout the city, and construction sites can present risks such as trip hazards, loose gravel, or machinery, particularly after dark.

The Department of Public Works advises families to plan their trick-or-treat routes to steer clear of work zones. Recommendations include avoiding active construction areas like streets, sidewalks, and intersections under construction; using sidewalks and crosswalks instead of cutting through barricaded or coned-off spaces; wearing reflective clothing or carrying glow sticks and flashlights for visibility; closely supervising children near intersections and in areas with limited lighting; and following posted signage and detours around work zones.

"To ensure a safe and enjoyable evening for all, families are encouraged to plan their trick-or-treat routes around work zones," the department stated.

Residents seeking more information about ongoing projects and street closures can contact the Department of Public Works at (309) 494-8800.
