Veterans Day, observed each year on November 11, marks the anniversary of the end of World War I. The Department of Veterans Affairs notes that this date was chosen because fighting between Allied countries and Germany ceased on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. President Woodrow Wilson led the first celebration in 1919, which included parades and a pause in business at 11 a.m.

The holiday, originally called Armistice Day, was established to honor those who served in the United States Armed Forces. It continues to be recognized across the country with parades and commemorative events.

Members of the Illinois House Republicans have highlighted their caucus members who are veterans: Rep. David Friess (R-Red Bud), Rep. Paul Jacobs (R-Pomona), Rep. Wayne Rosenthal (R-Morrisonville), Rep. Dan Swanson (R-Alpha), Rep. Brandun Schweizer (R-Danville), and Rep. Blaine Wilhour (R-Beecher City).

“This Veterans Day, take the time to attend a community event or parade and thank a veteran for their service to our nation.”

Rep. Ryan Spain has served as a Republican member of the Illinois State House since his election in 2017, representing the state's 73rd House District after succeeding David R. Leitch.
