Peoria Advisory Committee on Police Community Relations reviews crime stats

The Peoria Advisory Committee on Police Community Relations met May 12.

The advisory committee on police community relations advises the chief of police of the city, the mayor and city council on matters concerned with improving police-community relations and provides an independent means of communications and assistance between the citizens of Peoria and the Peoria Police Department in order to foster a positive working relationship between the community and the police. The committee meets at 5:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of every month at City Hall, 419 Fulton St..

Here is the meeting agenda as provided by the Peoria Advisory Committee on Police Community Relations:

ROLL CALL - Present: R. Ali, chair, S. Draper, M. Fogliano, D. Jackson, L. King, J. Mitchell, E. Thomas, and T. Wester. Absent: J. Bastian (excused), H. Firman, K. Green, T. Hoffman, D. Lindstrom (excused), D. Moore, C. Schierer, S. Sierra, and H. Williamson (excused). Chair Ali acknowledged a quorum.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES - Chair Ali asked for a motion to approve the minutes of March 10, 2016.

Member Fogliano motioned; seconded by Member King. Motion approved with no corrections by viva voce vote to approve. Minutes approved.

GENERAL POLICE UPDATE

- Recent civilian hired: Kathleen Johnston-Management Analyst and Jennifer Schroer Neighborhood Development Specialist.

- Anticipate to hire additional police officers in the fall.

- Cadet Program progress is moving forward.

- Crime stats for robberies and shootings are up.

- Renovation in progress on the East Bluff resident officer home on Republic & Bigelow.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS - Chair Ali informed that the City Council deferred the fair employment  practices to diversity police and fire departments until June 14th.

Chair Ali to contact the City Manager Mr. Urich to determine a designee to replace Kate Green that represented the City Manager’s Office.

NEW BUSINESS / ANNOUNCEMENTS

- The next No Islam-No Peace; Peace for Peoria event to be held on May 16th, 6-8:30 PM at the Peoria Civic Center Theatre.

- The Police Memorial Service for fallen police officers to be held Wednesday, May 18th at noon.

- The next Peace Walk to start at the old Aldi’s store on Western Avenue, Friday, May 20th.

CITIZENS OPPORTUNITY TO ADDRESS THE COMMITTEE - Ms. Britta Johnson, resident of Peoria, a graduate of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, authored a study called “Does Systemic Racism Play in Peoria: A Case Study of Traffic Stops by the Peoria Police Department.”

EXECUTIVE SESSION – None

ADJOURNMENT - Chair Ali asked for a motion to adjourn. Member Jackson motioned; seconded by L. King. Motion approved by a viva voce vote to adjourn. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 6:44 p.m.
