The Peoria Public Works Department said Sheridan Road between McClure and Nebraska avenues will remain closed through mid-December to reconstruct that section of road as part of the Sheridan Road Improvement Project.
Detours are posted or drivers can use Knoxville Avenue.
The detour takes drivers west on Columbia, north on University and east on McClure. The Peoria County Health Department will remain open through the road closure. Access to the Health Department building is available by turning east on Brons Street.
During the construction work, which will pause in mid-December and resume in spring, drivers are asked to use extreme caution in the construction zone and on the detour. Speed limits will be enforced. Watch for construction workers and equipment entering and leaving the construction zone. The Public Works Department also reminds drivers that it is illegal to use cellphones in construction zones.
The improvement project will include new sidewalks with Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) required sidewalk ramps for wheelchair users and mobility-impaired pedestrians. The project will also add ornamental street lights. The road will be reconstructed with hot mix asphalt pavement. When complete, it will also feature permeable paver bike lanes on both sides of the road. Storm sewers will be added along Sheridan Road to improve water runoff into the existing storm sewer system.
