Unauthorized use of fire hydrants caused discolored water in Peoria Heights recently.

Some Peoria Heights residents called the water department and police department, complaining about water that looked dirty when coming out of faucets.

Both Peoria Heights Waterworks and the Peoria Heights Police Department investigated the situation to determine why the water would be discolored. The investigation revealed that some fire hydrants were used without authorization, although they did not indicate whether they knew who used the hydrants or why they were accessed.

When fire hydrants are accessed, water flowing through the nearby pipes sometimes stirs up particles in the water mains, which causes water in the neighborhood to become discolored or dirty. Although these particles are not cause for concern for health or personal safety, they may stain white or light-colored laundry so it's best to avoid washing until the water clears.

The police department asks residents to report any suspicious or unmarked vehicles accessing fire hydrants within the community. Any suspicious activity can be reported to the non-emergency police number at 309-688-3461.
