The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM) are urging safety for those involved in fireworks displays this Fourth of July. They emphasize the importance of ensuring that vendors have the necessary state licenses and certificates before proceeding with fireworks shows.

According to the Illinois Explosives Act, anyone dealing with explosives, including display fireworks, must possess an explosives license and storage certificate issued by the IDNR. However, these licensing and storage requirements do not apply to consumer fireworks, classified as 1.4 explosives.

Consumer fireworks are regulated by the OSFM and are only allowed in areas where local ordinances permit such displays. These can be purchased and used solely by adults who have obtained permits from their local authorities. It is important to note that handheld fireworks like firecrackers, roman candles, and bottle rockets are not approved for sale or use within Illinois.

For further information, individuals can refer to resources provided by IDNR and OSFM.
