State Rep. Norine Hammond (R-Macomb) will not let a Vietnam veteran be forgotten.
Hammond passed HJR97 at the May 8 House floor debate in honor of Sgt. Don H. Lascelles.
Born and raised in Mason County, Lascelles graduated with honors from Balyki Community High School in 1965 and enlisted in the U.S. Army to later serve in Vietnam.

“Sgt. Lascelles was cited for valor in assuming command of his platoon in action against the enemy after his platoon leaders fell in battle, one seriously wounded and the other killed,” the bill text reads.
After being awarded the Bronze Star for his bravery, Lascelles was mortally wounded on June 6, 1969 after again putting his life on the line for his fellow officers while in battle, according to the bill.
“It is highly fitting that the General Assembly pays honor and respect to the truly great individuals who have served our country, and in doing so, have gone above and beyond the call of duty to make the ultimate sacrifice for our nation,” the bill text reads.
HR97 passed unanimously at 111-0.
