Several Republican state senators want answers as to why Illinois ranked among the worst for the COVID-19 vaccine rollout.
The senators' concerns are based on findings from the state's Department of Public Health and a New York Times analysis, according to a Jan. 28 letter from the lawmakers to Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
Sen. Win Stoller (R-Germantown Hills) added his name to the letter that asked Pritzker why Illinois ranked 47th among all states in vaccine distribution.
In the letter, the senators described the numbers as staggering. Of the 537,050 vaccines made available to the state and allotted to long-term facilities, 20% of the doses have been dispersed to the state's most vulnerable population. Additionally, 4.8% of the state's population have received at least one shot. Illinois also ranksed last among its sister states, Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, New York and California.
"Our state's vaccine distribution numbers are shameful. They rank at the bottom compared to every other state in the nation. My colleagues and I want to hear a clear explanation from the Governor on how this failure occurred," Stoller said in the release.
