The city of Peoria and Peoria Park District will host a press conference announcing the extension of the Rock Island Greenway on Tuesday, November 1 at 9:30 AM at Goodwill Commons, 2319 E. War Memorial Drive. The extension, which comprises of the repurposing of a former railroad trestle over War Memorial Drive, also includes another half-mile of the trail to Park Street.
Speakers at the press conference will include Mayor Rita Ali, Robert L. Johnson, Senior, President of the Peoria Park District, Brent Baker, President of Bike Peoria, and Mike Rucker, Chairman of the Trail Advocates for Central Illinois.
The Rock Island Greenway was completed from Pioneer Industrial Park to War Memorial Drive in 2014. Since this completion, it has become a popular destination for community members and visitors. “The Peoria Park District is honored to be a part of this collaborative effort. The trail has become a cornerstone of our community’s vibrancy and connectivity. Trail usage continues to grow, whether as support of wellness opportunities, community recreation, or to commute to and from the downtown,” stated, stated Emily Cahill, Peoria Park District Executive Director.
Noting the popularity of the trail, Peoria City Manager Patrick Urich stated, “The City is looking at future plans working with Illinois Department of Transportation to complete the connection to the Peoria Riverfront and connect the trail east across the McCluggage Bridge to East Peoria.” Thousands of people use the trail on an annual basis.
