In a Facebook post this week, Illinois state Rep. Travis Weaver (R-Edwards) recognized the Future Farmers of America (FFA) during National FFA Week.
“Happy #NationalFFAWeek to all Illinois and nationwide FFA students and chapters!” he said in the post. “Your dedication to agriculture and leadership is admirable, and ensures all of us can rely on healthy and nutritious food to be on our tables every single day.”
FFA has three levels: Local chapters, state associations and the national organization.
The Illinois Association FFA kicked off the special week with a Facebook post of its own.
"Happy FFA Week Illinois FFA!" the Feb. 19 post said. "The Major State Officer Team is kicking the week off with SAE Sunday. We have all shared a glimpse of what our Supervised Agriculture Experiences are like, and we encourage you to do the same! Keep a lookout for an SAE article to see all of the opportunites that come with a record book! #FFAWeek2023 #NationalFFAWeek #electrifyilffa"
The Illinois FFA was formed in 1928 when J.E. Hill, State supervisor of Agriculture Education, mentioned the Future Farmers of America program to teachers at a state teachers' convention. Nearly 1,500 students and advisors showed up in June to create the Illinois Future Farmers of America.
Travis Weaver joined the Illinois House of Representatives in January 2023 representing the 93rd District, the General Assembly website said. The freshman representative is assigned to a variety of committees, including the Appropriations-Public Safety; Energy & Environment; Housing; Immigration & Human Rights; Insurance; Personnel & Pensions; and Revenue & Finance committees; along with the Tax Credit and Incentives Subcommittee.
