City of Peoria Issues Combined Sewer Overflow Alert

The City of Peoria issued a warning regarding a combined sewer overflow (CSO) into the Illinois River due to recent rainfall. The alert advises residents to avoid full-body contact with the Illinois River downstream from Detweiller Marina to prevent potential health risks. The warning states, "When this warning is posted, please avoid full-body contact with the Illinois River in the area downstream from Detweiller Marina. You may get sick if you swallow water while swimming, Jet Skiing, or water skiing in these areas after a combined sewer overflow."

Additionally, the city is actively working on projects to mitigate combined sewer overflows to the Illinois River during wet weather. This initiative is in line with the requirements set forth by the Clean Water Act and the CSO Consent Decree. According to the alert, "The City of Peoria is constructing projects to reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs) to the Illinois River during wet weather, as required under the Clean Water Act and the CSO Consent Decree."
