August 13, 2024, Peoria, IL – Stevie A. Linwood, 43, has been charged with First-Degree Murder and Attempted Murder following an incident in which he allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend and then shot a neighbor. The State has filed a Petition to Detain Linwood, which will be reviewed by a judge tomorrow.

Just after 8 pm on Sunday, police responded to the 3400 block of N. El Vista in Peoria after receiving reports of two individuals being shot. Upon arrival, officers discovered two women with gunshot wounds; one was found lying in the doorway of a home while the other was in the front yard.

The woman in the doorway was identified as Zaneta S. Winters, 35, who was later pronounced brain dead on Monday afternoon after sustaining a gunshot wound to the back of her head. According to witness statements provided to detectives, the second victim—a neighbor—was shot while attempting to assist Winters. The witness reported seeing Linwood standing over the neighbor and shooting her before walking away from the scene.

Linwood was subsequently arrested nearby. The neighbor remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are anticipated as the case advances to the Grand Jury. Anyone with information related to this incident is urged to contact the Peoria Police Department at 309-673-4521.
