U.S. Representatives Darin LaHood and Darrell Issa have called for increased diplomatic pressure and economic sanctions on Nabih Berri, Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament. In a letter addressed to President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen, LaHood and Issa expressed concerns over Lebanon's stalled presidential election process.

The representatives emphasized that the failure to hold an open and fair parliamentary session to elect a president has benefited Hezbollah and Iran, harming the Lebanese people. They urged the U.S. administration to adopt a revitalized policy towards Lebanon, including renewed diplomatic efforts and targeted support through USAID and the Lebanese Armed Forces.

LaHood and Issa stated: "Since October 7, 2023, we have watched Israel fight against Iranian terror proxies Hamas and Hezbollah...As Hezbollah’s grip on Lebanon weakens...we believe the United States should move forward with direct pressure of Speaker Nabih Berri...to act quickly and hold immediate elections for president."

They further argued that electing a president is crucial for Lebanon's future stability: "Without a president...the Lebanese people are denied a national voice...This situation has clearly benefited Hezbollah...and continue[s] to harm the Lebanese people."

The letter also highlighted the need for stronger action from the U.S.: "The United States must throw its diplomatic weight behind advancing this reform...by imposing meaningful sanctions." They suggested reviewing and freezing assets of those obstructing the electoral process.

Over recent months, Berri has been accused of hindering Lebanon's electoral process. LaHood and Issa described his actions as harmful to Lebanon's citizens and potential recovery.

Both representatives have actively engaged in efforts concerning Lebanon due to their Lebanese heritage. They have led delegations to Lebanon in previous years, advocating for timely presidential elections.
