Rainfall in Peoria has led to a combined sewer overflow (CSO) into the Illinois River. Residents are advised to avoid full-body contact with the river downstream from Detweiller Marina due to potential health risks. The City of Peoria cautions that individuals could become ill if they swallow water while engaging in activities such as swimming, jet skiing, or water skiing in affected areas after a CSO event.

The city is actively working on projects aimed at reducing these overflows during wet weather conditions. These efforts are part of compliance measures under the Clean Water Act and the CSO Consent Decree.
