A winter storm is forecasted to hit the City of Peoria starting tomorrow morning, Sunday, Jan. 5, and is expected to continue throughout the day into Monday morning, Jan. 6. The anticipated snow accumulation ranges from 2 to 5 inches during this period.

To prepare for the incoming storm, the Department of Public Works applied liquid pretreatments on Friday, Jan. 3, focusing on overpasses, bridges, and hills. The Public Works Snowfighters will commence continuous 12-hour operations at 7 a.m. on Sunday to manage street treatment throughout the storm's duration.

As the storm begins, crews will prioritize treating primary streets and emergency snow routes in the city while snowfall continues. Residential street treatment will be initiated once two inches of snow have accumulated and ceased falling. Parking restrictions on snow routes are automatically enforced when a forecast predicts two or more inches of snow; these restrictions remain active for 48 hours.

The forecast includes periods of heavy snow with wind gusts up to 30 mph, potentially making travel hazardous as roads may freeze or refreeze quickly. Residents are advised to:

- Stay home if possible.

- Slow down and brake gradually while using extreme caution.

- Maintain extra distance between their vehicle and snowplows.

- Carry an emergency kit in their vehicle.
