Jim Rule, chairman of the Tazewell County Republicans, criticized Governor Pritzker's focus on a state flag redesign. He said that this focus diverts attention from pressing issues in Illinois, such as crime and economic challenges. Rule made these remarks to the Peoria Standard on February 4.
"Governor Pritzker is wasting taxpayer money on a pointless state flag redesign while Illinois is drowning in crime, homelessness, and financial mismanagement," said Rule. "Instead of fixing our broken economy or making our streets safer, he's distracting voters with meaningless symbolism. Families are struggling, businesses are fleeing, and violent crime is out of control—yet Pritzker would rather spend time and resources on a new flag no one asked for. This is another example of Pritzker's failed leadership, proving once again that he cares more about political theater than actually helping the people of Illinois."
According to CBS News, Illinois residents are currently able to vote on one of ten finalists for the state flag redesign. Over 5,000 designs were submitted, and the Illinois Flag Commission has narrowed them down to ten options, including previous flags from 1918 and 1968. The current flag features the state seal on a white background. Voters also have the option to retain the existing flag. The commission will present its findings to lawmakers by April 1, who will then decide on the final outcome. Voting is open until February 14, allowing all Illinois citizens to participate.
In an August 7, 2023 press release from the Office of Governor JB Pritzker, it was said that "Governor JB Pritzker signed SB1818," which established the Illinois Flag Commission with the aim of exploring new state flag designs. The commission is tasked with making recommendations to the General Assembly regarding whether or not to replace the current state flag. By September 2024, they will select no more than ten potential flags and submit a report by December 2024.
Rule has been serving as chairman of the Tazewell County Republicans since his election in 2018. According to their website, he focuses on increasing Republican voter turnout, expanding party membership, and communicating party positions on issues important to Tazewell County voters.
