The City of Peoria's Department of Public Works has initiated 12-hour, continuous operations in anticipation of freezing rain expected this afternoon. Crews began preparations this morning to address the weather conditions forecasted to affect the city around 3 pm and persist into the evening.

The expected ice accumulation is predicted to be minimal, ranging from a light glaze to a tenth of an inch. To mitigate potential hazards, crews are applying liquid and salt pretreatments to overpasses, bridges, hills, and main arterial roads throughout today.

Ice-covered roads pose different challenges compared to snow-covered ones. Drivers are advised to exercise extreme caution when traveling on icy surfaces. It is recommended to reduce speed, maintain extra distance between vehicles, and remain vigilant for changing road conditions.
