Rainfall in Peoria has led to a combined sewer overflow into the Illinois River. The city advises avoiding full-body contact with the river downstream from Detweiller Marina due to health risks associated with swallowing contaminated water while swimming, jet skiing, or water skiing.

The City of Peoria is actively working on projects aimed at reducing these overflows during wet weather. This initiative is part of compliance efforts under the Clean Water Act and the CSO Consent Decree.
