Illinois State Representative Travis Weaver has expressed concern over the direction of educational standards in the state. Weaver criticized recent actions by the Illinois State Board of Education, stating that instead of helping students excel in reading and math, the board has chosen to lower academic expectations.

Weaver said, "While other states are working hard to address the national epidemic of poor reading and math efficiency, Illinois continues to lag behind and hide from the educational deficiencies facing our children."

He cited a decision made earlier this year by the board as an example, arguing that it lowered expectations for students rather than raising them. More information on this issue can be found at Virginia raises bar for students while Illinois hides struggles.

Weaver, a Republican, was elected to represent Illinois' 93rd House District in 2023, succeeding Norine Hammond.
