OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital of Illinois has become the first facility in Central Illinois to use the Cochlear Nucleus Nexa System, described as the world’s first “smart” cochlear implant system.
Dr. John Greinwald Jr., an otolaryngologist at OSF Children’s Hospital, recently performed the region's initial implants using this new technology. According to the hospital, this advancement allows local children to access cutting-edge hearing care ahead of other hospitals in the area.
The Cochlear Nucleus Nexa System offers several technological improvements, including upgradable firmware and internal rewritable memory. These features allow patients to receive software updates and future enhancements without undergoing additional surgery. The device also stores each user's unique hearing information, known as MAPs, which can be transferred if a new sound processor is needed.
Additional features include compact and lightweight sound processors with all-day battery life, adaptive sound processing for various environments, and a connected ecosystem that supports ongoing care.
OSF Children’s Hospital states it aims to serve as a surgical destination for pediatric care by providing access to advanced medical technology and specialized expertise for families across Central Illinois.
