City of East Peoria issued the following announcement on Dec. 14.
Residents and business owners who currently receive city text notifications or wish to start getting them need to sign up for the city’s new texting system. The current texting program is being discontinued.
The CodeRED Community Notification System, launched in August, will now be used to send City of East Peoria emergency and non-emergency text messages to subscribed users. There is no registration fee to sign up for CodeRED messages.
Those who register can choose to receive messages via text, voicemail or email, or all three methods. Emergency messages, including boil advisories, parking bans, severe road conditions or closures, and law enforcement and weather emergencies can be geographically targeted to the addresses and areas affected. This means that a message about a boil advisory, for example, will go out to only those addresses and areas affected. This is a great improvement over the city’s current texting program which does not have this ability.
People can also choose to receive general community notifications from Public Works, city government, the Police and Fire departments, Festival of Lights and others. These notifications include holiday garbage schedules, early closures, community programs and more.
The messages will come through a mobile device’s normal texting function.
