Canton Union School District 66 Board met Nov. 10.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

1. CALL TO ORDER

Board President Leonard Barnard called the special board meeting to order in the boardroom at 8:00 AM.

2. ROLL CALL

Board members present and answering roll call were Leonard Barnard, Ben Bishop, Lori Coleman, Matt Kees, Jane Lewis, Tom Snowman, and Mark Tarter.

3. AMENDMENTS TO THE AGENDA

There were no amendments to the special board meeting agenda.

4. AUDIENCE REQUESTS TO ADDRESS BOARD OF EDUCATIONS

There were no audience requests to address the Board of Education.

5. RECOGNITION OF 2018 SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS DAY

Board members were presented with a gift card from the District #66 administration in appreciation of their service on the Canton School District Board of Education. The Canton City Council passed a Resolution recognizing November 15, 2018 as School Board Members Day.

6. CONDUCT BOARD RETREAT

A. DISCUSSION ITEMS/ACTIVITIES

1. Mission, Vision, and Four Pillars

Information provided to the Board by Curriculum Director Jason Parsons reviewed the Four Pillars, Mission, and Vision of the School District.

2. Objective for the Retreat

a. Develop Goals for 2019-2020

3. History

a. Where have we been?

b. Where are we now?

c. Where should we go?

The Board discussed SMART Goals for 2019-2020 and discussed updates on the Elementary, Middle School and High School programs. Data will be used to drive placement. The Board held discussion regarding the history and current state of the District and direction for the future. (On File)

a. Affinity Diagram

1. Topic

a. District Priorities for 2019-2020

b. Multi-dot voting

A group exercise was held to define the Board’s Top Five Priorities. Items identified were: 1) Attendance Centers; 2) Leadership; 3) Vocational; 4) Student Achievement; and 5) Marketing, along with Financial.

5. Development of SMART Goals

The group brainstormed ideas for SMART Goal development on the top district priorities and a timeline: December 2018-Report at the regular board meeting; February 2019-Hearing on the results; and March 2019-Board action on Board Goals. (On File)

6. Close

a. Thoughts

Synopsis and conclusions on the retreat were reviewed.

7. Discuss 2018 Resolutions Committee Report

Board members were given the opportunity to provide input to Delegate Matt Kees on resolutions to be voted on at the November 17, 2018 Delegate Assembly. Board members discussed resolutions addressing Student Safety and Protection (staff possession of guns on school property) and the alternative energy resolution. Consensus to vote ‘yes’ on both resolutions.

7. CLOSED SESSION

A. Discuss the Appointment, Employment, Compensation, Discipline, Performance, or Dismissal of Specific Employees of the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body to determine its validity – [5 ILCS 120/2(c)(1)]

Board member Lewis moved to enter closed session to discuss matters pertaining to personnel [5 ILCS 120/2(c)(1)]. Snowman seconded. Voting yes by roll call were board members Lewis, Snowman, Brnard, Bishop, Coleman, Kees, and Tarter. Motion carried.

The Board entered closed session at 10:38 AM. The Board returned to open session at 11:01 AM.

8. ADJOURN SPECIAL MEETING

Board member Kees moved to adjourn the special meeting. Board member Lewis seconded. Voting yes by roll call were board members Kees, Lewis, Barnard, Bishop, Coleman, Snowman, and Tarter. Motion carried.

Board President Barnard declared the special meeting adjourned at 11:14 am.
