State Rep. Tim Butler (R-Springfield) is hoping there is strength in numbers when it comes to his crusade against the $118 trailer tax.
“Peeling back this trailer fee is something we are in broad agreement on in this body,” Butler said in a video posted to YouTube. “It is something that we need to address and there are multiple pieces of legislation on both sides of the aisle that would address it.”
Butler’s Republican colleague Avery Bourne (R-Morrisonville) has 62 co-sponsors for House Bill 636, that would instantly decrease the tax. Bourne added there are nine other identical bills from both Republicans and Democrats that decrease the trailer tax the governor first moved to enact as part of his capital bill in 2019.
“People are not going to pay a tax like that for a trailer to sit in the yard and only be used once a year,” Butler added. “It is something that we’ve talked about, and talked about, and talked about, and it drives the public nuts when they contact our offices and nothing ever gets done on something that would be easy to fix."
"Let’s be consistent on this. It’s not meant to be $118 and it’s time we address this and get it done," Butler said. "People tell me they’re not going to pay $118, but despite broad bipartisan support for measures to reduce the tax Illinois levies on trailers, legislation has failed to advance.”
