City of Atlanta issued the following announcement on May. 19.

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced the 43rd Annual Design Awards event to be hosted by the Department of City Planning and the Atlanta Urban Design Commission.

“The Design Awards highlight design excellence in Atlanta’s construction projects, developments, public art, historic preservation efforts and landscape architecture work—all of which continue to set national standards for urban development and beautification,” said Mayor Bottoms. “We welcome opportunities to publicly showcase those who are making Atlanta better through design.”

There are two types of awards presented during the event: The Award of Excellence—now in its 43rd year—honors projects, programs or people that have contributed to the enhancement of Atlanta’s physical character. The 4th annual Community Design Award celebrates projects, programs or people that have made a notable impact on the quality of life in our communities. Winners of the Awards of Excellence are chosen by the Atlanta Urban Design Commission. Neighborhood Planning Units (NPUs) choose winners for their neighborhood Community Design Awards.

“Atlanta is a unique city with examples of great design in some of the most unexpected places. Even in the midst of an unexpected pandemic, we have a responsibility to recognize and celebrate great design in an equally unique way. The virtual Design Awards will provide all of us an exciting opportunity to come together to reflect on some trailblazing projects, revel in the excitement of the present, and encourage future projects to continue to raise the bar,” said UDC Chair Desmond Johnson.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will be virtual and hosted via Zoom on May 18th, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. Guest speakers will include Department of City Planning Commissioner, Tim Keane, and Doug Young, Assistant Director, Office of Design and Historic Preservation.

“Although we have enjoyed past stellar in-person events, this year’s virtual experience will not disappoint as we look forward to highlighting the great work that has been accomplished in our city even during a pandemic,” said Commissioner Keane.
