Rep. Ryan Spain (R-Peoria) encouraged his constituents to slow down and stay safe in an April 13 Facebook post focusing on road construction. He also shared a link to a news story about the topic.

"Construction season is starting up in Illinois and that means more equipment and workers out on the roadways. Keep yourself and road workers safe by remembering to slow down and stay alert in work zones," Spain posted on Facebook.

Motorists can learn about road construction at this IDOT page.

In a work zone safety fact sheet with Illinois information, IDOT offered these safety tips: Drop the phone and drive; slow down and obey speed limits; move over for workers whenever possible; pay attention to conditions and, remember, backups can occur at any time.

Spain shared a link to a WBCU.org article published April 12, which quoted Illinois State Police Trooper Haylie Polistina, who reminded drivers to slow down and move over when they see law enforcement pulling someone over. The law corresponding to this action is called Scott's Law. "To date, our agency has had 10 squad cars struck as a result of Scott's Law violations. And it is only April," she said. "In 2021, there were 22 Scott's Law-related crashes."
